Acne & Congestion
Acne can be one of the most mentally, physically and spiritually debilitating skin conditions one can go through. Navigating one’s mental state is as difficult if not more difficult than the condition itself. The many layers involved in treating this condition can become overwhelming, exhausting and expensive at times so we want you to know that here at TDC we are committed to supporting you through this journey as best we can in all the areas, we believe acne needs to be and should be addressed.
Acne can start off as the odd pimple both under the skin (commonly referred to as congestion) and on top aka whitehead/pustule. These spots can also be accompanied by what is commonly known as blackheads which is where a build up of oil, dead skin and dirt builds up in the pore and or follicle and becomes trapped. At the top of the follicle where the trapped oil meets air it turns black in colour due to oxidation. If these blocked pores and follicles close over due to excessive build up the lack of oxygen and build-up of dead skin and oil to the area creates a bacterial minefield and creates a pustule/whitehead.
There are so many causes that can contribute to acne, but the most common reasons are from the build-up of dead skin on the surface causing the follicle to become blocked and the excess oil being produced within the follicle itself. 9 times out of 10 if the individual can reach equilibrium with regulating the shedding of old skin and the amount of oil produced on top of and below the epidermis (outermost layer of skin) the condition can be managed. There are cases however where these naturally occurring functions become exacerbated or decline to function at all creating toxic environments that can lead to conditions such as cystic acne and or seborrheic dermatitis. These types of conditions require professional help as they can leave permanent scarring e.g., ice pick scarring and or hyper or hypopigmentation due to prolonged inflammation.
There are so many internal and external factors that can contribute to the malfunctioning of the skins naturally occurring functions such as:
- Hormonal Changes caused by puberty or pregnancy
- Medication
- Stress
- Diets high in refined sugars and processed foods
- Certain ingredients in Skincare
- Make up
- Genetics
This is why here at TDC we are committed to bringing you professional knowledge, advice and tips from all areas internally and externally that can and do contribute to acne and its long list of side effects.
